LA PERRA DEL HORTELANO
x LA BIEN QUERIDA
La Bien Querida asked me to direct the music video for the first single of her new album Paprika. The truth is that, although it was a bit scary at first, it was an experiment from which I learned a lot. The best thing was being able to turn the meaning of the song around and take it to a more personal world.
Lope De Vega wrote "El perro del hortelano" in 1618 and from it came the Spanish expression "Ni come ni deja comer" (Neither eats nor lets eat). Because the dog is a non-vegetarian animal that doesn't eat the vegetables from its master's garden, but doesn't let the other animals eat them either. After listening to this song by La Bien Querida, I thought of the parallel with those who fumigate the gardens; they do it to protect us from pests but, in turn, because of this we end up eating pesticides without knowing it in the fruit and vegetables we buy. In "la perra del hortelano" I wanted to make a symbolic revisitation of this popular expression. Starting with a shopping trolley and a trailer behind a tractor full of fruit and vegetables, and with the story of five fumigators who fight over a dog-shaped piñata, full of lettuce and tomatoes, and who, because of their selfishness, end up neither eating nor letting themselves eat, ending the story with the trailer empty, the shopping trolley in flames and leaving all the fruit and vegetables rotting along the way.
